With another new year comes another batch of resolutions. Most of us want to lose weight, eat healthier, and improve our relationships. We all want to make big changes in our lives, but sometimes taking small steps is a much better approach. The following are ways to keep resolutions small and simple, and why that’s a better way of sticking to them.
Set Small Goals
Setting large goals oftentimes sets us up for failure. Losing 30 pounds between New Year’s Day and Memorial Day isn’t impossible but it can be intimidating. Instead of one massive goal try losing 5 pounds every two to three weeks. Losing 5 pounds in that amount of time is much more achievable and the time passes quickly. Your first taste of success will be the motivation you’ll need to stay on track until you reach your final goal.
Set Specific Goals
Setting specific goals is much easier to manage than one large overpowering goal. For example, if you’re looking for a new job simply stating “get a new job” as your resolution can be overwhelming. Instead, make your resolution to update your resume and send it out to five places each week. This is much more doable and ultimately involves positive steps toward the overall goal of landing a job. Just saying that you’ll eat healthier is another vague resolution that will be difficult to keep. Instead, plan to eat two servings of vegetables each day and cut back on junk food to one treat a week.
It’s not surprising that most of us can’t stick to large or vague resolutions. Incorporating small, specific steps will help keep you motivated and on track when it comes to keeping New Year’s resolutions.
