Flanders Red Ales, also called Flemish Red ales or Belgian Red ales, are a sour beer from Belgium. This is another sour that may take some getting used to.They originated in the West Flanders region. They are noted for being dark burgundy or brown in color, strong malt vinegar smell, sweet fruit (usually raisin, plum, or prune) and spice taste. The fermentation of a Flanders uses live cultures (similar to yogurt) to create a lactic acid. Red malt is used and they are aged in oak barrels. The fermentation process is similar to wine, which is why many wine drinkers are drawn to this sour. Flanders Reds are in sharp contrast to a Gose or Berlinerweisse. They are less of a refreshing beer, and more intense. We suggest pairing your Flanders with a great cheese plate, grapes, or a nice Charcuterie board. Serve in a goblet.
