The S.S. America lived many different lives before coming to rest in the Canary Islands. It was launched on August 31, 1939 and was considered the flagship of luxury cruise lines. However, as WWII broke out, S.S. America joined the Navy and was transformed into a troop carrier. After the war, S.S. America once again became a cruise ship, but eventually its design became outdated and the ship was once again changing roles. The ship even became a floating hotel of the coast of Liberia for a short period, and in 1993 a company in Thailand purchased the ship to serve as a floating near a resort. However, while being tugged across the Atlantic, lines broke during a thunderstorm and the S.S. America was adrift.
